Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage

"A fresh and vibrant wine with pear, honeysuckle and citrus tones on the nose. The palate is spicy with a long broad finish."

Cameron Douglas MS (2016 vintage)

"Ripe, fruity, rich and spicy with a core of roasted yellow and white fruits – lees, honeysuckle and warmth complete the bouquet. A bolder, richer and dry style of Gris with texture, white fleshed fruits and citrus flavours, medium acidity and tangy finish. Drink now and through 2020. Well suited to food."

Raymond Chan (2014 vintage)

"The nose is soft, full and accessible with aromas of ripe apricots, yellow stonefruits and honey with mineral nuances and a little floral lift. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the flavours of apricots, bitter yellow stonefruits and kernels are light and restrained. The wine has good weight and presence, revealing some fruit richness and sweetness in the glass. The mouthfeel is fresh and crisp, and the wine follows a fine-textured thread that leads to a light, stonefruit and nutty nuanced finish. This is a dry Pinot Gris with light apricot and stonefruit kernel flavours and nutty notes. Serve with Mediterranean fare over the next 2+ years. Single vineyard estate fruit fermented in stainless-steel to 13.5% alc. and 4.5 g/L RS. 16.5-/20 Mar 2015 RRP $19.95 "
