A rich and savoury Grenache blend from the Barossa. Spinifex are boutique players in Barossa, a couple originally from New Zealand and France who are influenced by the spirit of Southern French wine. The Esprit includes a small amount of Cinsault as a spin on the Rhone GSM, Grenache leading with softness and flow while Mataro and Cinsualt back up structure, density and freshness. A superbly layered and savoury style, the Esprit is 'new wave' Barossa at its best.

Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre), Cinsault

Its Origins

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

What The Critics Say

93/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"Grenache. No 2016 or 2017 Esprit. Mataro and shiraz fill out the blend. Old vines (150-year-old plus for grenache). Good times. Very smart wine. Earthy, savoury bouquet with dried but fresh-feeling berry fruits, some dark chocolate notes, but faint, black jelly bean and anise. The palate is supple, draws long to a fine pucker, feels a bit ’emery board texture’ and shows some inky concentration though the wine rides high on cool acidity. It’s quite an elegant wine at the same time as being a bit rugged, in the best sense. I like this." Drink 2019 - 2025

96/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2015 vintage)

"58% grenache, 40% mataro, 2% cinsaut, whole berry/whole bunch wild fermentation, matured for 14 months in large-format used French oak. This is still at the dawn of its life, the colour brilliant, but deep, the bouquet simply directing traffic to the medium-bodied palate that has so much to say. Red and dark fruits come first spice, herbs and earth next, frisky tannins on the finish."
