A high-scoring Syrah from a boutique legend of the Barossa. This red is called a Syrah (not Shiraz) because its an effort by Spinifex to present nothing too heavy but a more European or Kiwi-inspired, "classic" expression. The result remains very generous and lush, though its harmonies come in more medium bodied form and focus on redder fruits and exotic spice. A lovely reference point for Spinifex's deep European influence, the Syrah is delicious for the price.

Its Origins

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

What The Critics Say

93+/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"This is a Barossa and Eden combo of six parcels of vineyard. Incredible value, by my matrix, for this wine. All class, and holds the heft of riper fruit and booziness well. This could be your buy of the year. Choc-cherry scents with brambly notes, earthiness, undergrowth and autumnal mushroom/leafiness too. I like this. Glossy textured, spicy, fine tannins rippling through darker berry fruits, a lick of mocha, but a green-herb/dried-herb note through the wine. Elegant, svelte, fine and very long with an assertively spicy finish. Definitively ‘syrah’ not ‘shiraz’ of this region, if you get my drift. Excellent." Drink 2019 - 2027

97/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2017 vintage)

"20-50yo vines, whole berry and whole bunch ferments in, 8 months in French oak (10% new). From Yarra Valley pinot to Barossa Valley shiraz is a massive distance, yet the '17 vintage has kissed them both, with lower alcohol levels and producing wines of great intensity, length and balance. The Barossa Valley seldom has spice and licorice as first up aromas and flavours, but it does that in spades here, the palate a glorious rendition. It borders on full-bodied, but to leave or reduce any part of what is here would be vinocide."
