A powerful and refined Rasteau red from the hometown experts, Soumade. The Prestige is grown on the fringes of the Ventabren alpine terrace, which adds limestone content to the famous yellow and blue clay (which helpd help fruit retain water in the area's baking heat). The result is a Grenache-led wine that is rich and structured, yet bright and perfumed. From the specialists, this cuvee is a serious delight.

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

"The 2018 Rasteau Prestige shows some dried-spice notes and dusty tannins suggestive of new foudre, set against a backdrop of mixed raspberries and black cherries. Medium to full-bodied and reasonably intense, it's supple and clean, with a svelte mouthfeel and a long, focused finish that hints at leather and licorice. For a Rasteau, it should be reasonably long-lived, with about a decade of aging potential." Drink 2021 - 2030

"Sourced from 30- to 50-year-old vines grown on clay-limestone, the fruit is fermented in tronconic stainless steel tanks then aged for 18 months in foudres, demi-muids and concrete tanks on its fine lees. It has a lovely finesse of violets and berry fruits, with very fine tannins, piercing acidity and a long, tapered finish. Subtle spicy elements bring interest.
