Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
The establishment of Sandalford Wines in 1840 coincided with both the first European settlement at the Colony of Perth and birth of Western Australia's world famous wine industry. In 1970, the Company was one of three initial pioneers of the Margaret River wine region (275km south of Perth and today considered by many as one of the world's truly great premium wine growing appellations) when the first vines were planted at its 300 hectare vineyard located there.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current vintage
"Dark cherry red. Initially this wine is rich with dark brooding berries. As it opens up there is a real juiciness that comes across with savoury spices of nutmeg and cedar to balance the black and blue berry notes. There's generous sweet flavours, particularly the darker berries, but also plums and rhubarb that are balanced with savoury spices, bay leaf, fresh nutmeg and mocha. These sweet and savoury notes keep evolving in the glass to give wonderful complexity. Velvety smooth tannins add to the complexity on the palate."
94/100 James Halliday (2016 vintage)
"Estate-grown, matured in new French oak. Cassis, plum and leaf on the bouquet are replicated on the opening stanzas of the palate. It's not until the finish that the tannins appear and lock onto the taste buds, allied with bay leaf and black olive. Demands patience."
