A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.
What The Critics Say
92/100 The Real Review, Bob Campbell MW
"Supple, elegant chardonnay with white peach, ginger, spicy oak and hazelnut flavours supported by a core of fruity acidity. A moderately complex wine, with a nice balance between fruit and winemaker artefact 22 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2023
92/100 Wine-Pages.com, Tom Cannavan
"This spends 11 months in French oak, 30% new. Lovely nose of buttery Brazil nut and a touch of nougat, plenty of peach juiciness. The palate is smooth and elegant, the peachy fruit is there, but cut by sweet and ripe lime and a citrus - not sharp, there’s a clean but generous acid profile."
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)
"Wonderfully complex and inviting, the bouquet shows golden peach, nougat, roasted hazelnut and vanilla characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is generously fruited and richly textured. It is complex, multi-layered and engaging with an impressively long, delectable finish. $27.00. www.riverbyestate.com. Sept 2018."
