Its Origins
"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage
"A particularly aromatic Sicilian variety,
with aromas of apricots, loquat, bee wax and algae.
Light yellow colour with green hints; fresh and lively in
spite of a notable level of alcohol. Match with raw fish, pasta with sea urchins, fried
vegetables and fish. Also good with creamy white
cheese as well as vegetables with dips."
91/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2017 vintage)
"Bright golden-tinged yellow. Very clean pink grapefruit, gooseberry and herbs on the perfumed nose. Then multifaceted and dense, with very good freshness nicely framing the peach, citrus fruit and floral flavors. A really lovely wine with a nice saline finish and sneaky concentration. Well done."
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)
"Awesome and bright with intensity, the 2015 Sicilia Menfi Cometa is the latest edition of a landmark white wine from Sicily. The Fiano grape reveals its natural complexity slowly with delicate renderings of stone fruit, saffron, lightly toasted pine nut and yellow rose. The effect is silky and svelte in terms of texture, but the finish is driven by a long sense of power and persistence. Winemaking is executed under extreme temperature control and the wine rests on fine lees in stainless steel in order to achieve its profound sense of depth and dimension. It should evolve slowly for the next decade."
