93 Points Decanter
In stock
One of the most subtly powerful and impressive examples of this native Sicilian grape. The Nero d'Avola grape is said to originate in this locally famous town, the Noto DOC. Here Planeta's exceptional investment of ancient terroir and vines, along with state of the art winemaking, have produced a black-fruited and ripe but silky pinnacle of their portfolio. Effortless to drink yet deeply enriched by its place and tradition, this top Sicilian wine is gorgeous.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"Brooding in the glass, the 2018 Santa Cecilia takes its time to develop its hauntingly alluring bouquet. Swirling unlocks depths of plum sauce and sage mixed with enriching notes of brown spice and finally a lifting hint of camphor It boasts medium-bodied notes of brown spice and, finally, a lifting hint of camphor. It boasts medium-bodied weight and the silkiest of textures, nearly glycerol in feel, as waves of ripe red and black fruits are offset by a twang of sour citrus that rings like a dinner bell amongst this sea of dark depths. Sweet tannins linger through the finale, leaving a classically dry but only lightly structured sensation, as hints of licorice and inner rose fade. The 2018 Santa Cecilia, a varietal Nero d'Avola from Noto, is a huge success from a difficult vintage. Sometimes I struggle with a score for a wine that is this atypical of the vintage, but plainly stated, the 2018 is a showstopper." Drink 2023 - 2030

17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Lustrous ruby. Intense, perfumed, lifted and sweetly concentrated red-fruit nose with hints of rhubarb and cigar box. Much more direct and exuberant on the palate than the Controdanza with vibrant acidity and sandpapery tannins. Long and focused. 100% Nero d'Avola fermented in stainless steel and aged for 14 months in barrique. (WS)" Drink 2021 - 2028

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2017 vintage)

"This is the top-shelf wine from Planeta. The 2017 Sicilia Noto Santa Cecilia is a pure and exacting expression of Sicily's headline grape, Nero d'Avola. As readers know, this was a hot vintage in Sicily and in the rest of Italy. But careful winemaking and vineyard management have resulted in balanced fruit that shows crisp acidity and polished tannins. The wine maintains its elegance, but it also shows distinctive notes of its territory, which in Sicily are manifested as black fruit, Mediterranean herb, wild fennel, scorched earth, toasted almond and black olive. This is one of the great bellwether wines of Sicily: Its performance always reflects the vintage, in general."
