A premium icon Chardonnay grown in Mediterranean warmth by Planeta. The Plantea family are steeped in local Sicilian tradition, but are also fine-tuned experts in cosmopolitan taste. Thus the "whole new level" of international acclaim won by this superb Chardonnay grown in Menfi, just down the island's south coast from Marsala. Here consistent sun and cooling sea breezes produce a ripe, powerful and generous style. Tropical fruits, toasty butter and textural French oak build on the palate in a charismatic way that is less typically Italian or French than it is simply delicious. Broad and expressive, decant this beauty now or age it further. Unique!

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage

"Single-variety Chardonnay whose characteristics which have made it so famous which here emerge very clearly. Starting from the richness of its deep clear golden but transparent colour one imagines the pleasing contrast of creaminess and crispness in the taste. It is indeed a soft white wine underlaid by a refreshing acid vein which accompanies each mouthful. A slight mineral suggestion combines harmoniously with the flavour of ripe yellow peaches, acacia honey and marzipan and with some peaty, cereal and toasted aromas which precede the powerful balanced finish."

90/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2016 vintage)

"Bright golden yellow. Strong notes of vanilla and caramel complicate tropical fruit nuances on the nose. Then rich and ripe, with buttery and oaky flavors of orchard fruit and pineapple. Finishes broad and tactile with building oakiness. After last year’s more discreet Old World-styled mineral Chardonnay, this is a return to Planeta’s more typical Chardonnay style, one that harkens more to the New World. For those who like this style of buttery vanillin and tropical fruit-accented Chardonnay. (14% alcohol)." Drink 2017 - 2022

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2014 vintage)

"The 2014 Sicilia Menfi Chardonnay takes Sicilian white wine to a whole new level. The Planeta family has been tinkering with this wine for a number of years and has gradually lessened the overall oak impact. That change is evident here and the grapes have benefitted from the excellent 2014 growing season. This was one of the best vintages in recent memory on the Mediterranean island. The bouquet offers balanced spice and ripe fruit with soothing creaminess and big intensity. I'm going to suggest a long drinking window for a wine of this high quality."
