Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Remarkable red that probably owes much of its rich, ripe flavours to relatively old vines and the experienced hand of winemaker, Matt Donaldson. Almost luscious plum, cassis, new leather, and spicy oak flavours with a smattering of dried herb characters to remind us that its from North Canterbury. 26 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2026

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Ripe, fruity, varietal and inviting bouquet with aromas of dark plums, black cherry and blackberry. No mistaking the use of oak with dark spices and toast, the fruit soaks that up easily. On the palate - fleshy and juicy with a plush vibrant texture. Medium+ tannins with sweet oak and vanilla, blackberry and plum flavours. Some violet and dry stone mineral layers emerging as the wine begins to open up in glass. Well made, youthful, fleshy and long. A lovely example ready to enjoy if decanted otherwise from 2021 through 2026." Drink 2020 - 2026

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Delightfully fruited and fragrant, the bouquet shows dark plum, cherry, olive, hazelnut and vanilla characters with a hint of dried herb complexity. It's succulent and smooth on the palate with beautifully rounded mouthfeel, backed by polished tannins, finishing long and flavoursome. $33.00. www.pegasusbay.com. March 2020." Drink 2020 - 2026
