Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Complex, organic, fruity, varietal and a little wild with white flowers, mayer lemon, grapefruit, red apple, cape gooseberry and a little passion fruit. Dry, fleshy and fruity on the palate with a hint of barrel ferment adding a creaminess to the core of fruit. Flavours of fruits and spice reflect the nose, soft herbs layer, abundant acidity, fine almost grainy texture, lengthy finish. Delicious!. This wine will age beyond 2024 if stored well." Drink 2019 - 2024+
