A star out of Central Otago, the Mount Edward Pinot is an elegant and complex wine that stands head and shoulders above most. Led by one of the region's pioneers, Duncan Forsyth promotes natural winemaking and this is conveyed in a palpable sense of harmony, with a focus beyond the silky richness to beautiful spicy, mineral and herbal layers. Its Origins

Mount Edward is a small winery located in the heart of the Gibbston grape growing district, 25 km from Queenstown, in Central Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1997, the winery was started by one of the pioneers of Central Otago wine, Alan Brady. Originally started as a small personal project Mount Edward has evolved from its humble beginnings as a stand alone Pinot Noir and Riesling producer. Today the winery has vineyards in the best sub regions of Central Otago, producing wines across a number of varieties and styles. Since 2004, winemaker Duncan Forsyth and proprietor John Buchanan, have focused Mount Edward on growing small batch premium single vineyard wines that reflect site and season. As part of this, all estate vineyards, and the winery itself, are certified organically.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"The 2018 Pinot Noir has a silky and lush texture fruit power, is concentrated yet finely balanced with fine tannins throughout and long in flavour. A classic vintage for us. Perfumed with lovely aromatics, there is a range of complexed fruit notes of darker berry fruit, some spice, savoury tones and dried herbs. Organically grown, made and certified, a blend of our best vineyard parcels."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"Combining gorgeous fruit ripeness with seductive savoury undertones, the wine shows ripe plum, cherry, cedar, warm spice and dark mushroom characters. The impressively concentrated palate displays excellent weight and plush mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by refine texture and fine polished tannins. Mouthfilling and gratifying with layers of delicious, engaging flavours. At its best: now to 2027. $49.00. www.mountedward.com. Sept 2020."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"The classy 2016 vintage (5*) of this regional blend was fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for 11 months in French oak casks (15 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is fragrant, youthful, savoury and supple, with ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and harmony. A very refined and age-worthy wine, it should be at its best 2019+. Certified organic."
