Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.
What The Critics Say
92/100 Huon Hooke
"Deep purple colour, a bright and fresh wine in every respect. Violets and licorice. Intense, lively palate, tight and crisp, and the acidity while evident is well-balanced. A pleasing sappiness in the tannins. Accessible now - a good early drinking style. (From 20-25 year-old vines in Serralunga) 10 JUL 2019." Drink 2019 - 2026
93/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh (2017 vintage)
"Deep and dark, plenty of blood plum and cherry, spice, new leather, sage and the like. Medium-bodied, ample fruit – it’s really thick and meaty – also spicy, and earthy, with fat nourishing tannin, balanced acidity, grip and perfume on a pretty long finish. It’ll age, and it drinks pretty well now, in a hearty food-friendly way. Excellent. Grown on 20-25 year old vines, all in Serralunga."
