A lush, powerful and full-flavoured style of Chardonnay from Waiheke experts Man O' War. Broad and satisfying it is still gripping and fresh on the palate, with a flint/salt and citrus pith themes driving this complex but compelling nose and palate. Man O' War are playing the long game with their seriously impressive Chardonnays. A future classic with very low stock, we recommend you cotton onto the Valhalla sooner rather than later.

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history. Rated as Waiheke’s finest vintage to date, the 2013 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional quality. Hand harvested and either gently foot stomped before pressing or whole bunch pressed directly to barrel for an un-inoculated ‘wild’ fermentation in 500 litre acacia or oak puncheons.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Rich, weighty, creamy-textured chardonnay with toast, sizzled butter, peach, melon, spice and citrus flavours (among others). A satisfyingly complex and textural wine that demonstrate impressive viticultural and winemaking skills 1/4/2019." Drink 2019 - 2024

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"Graceful and multi-layered, this compelling rendition offers lifted aromas of ripe stone fruit, mango, fig and toasted hazelnut characters with subtle notes of flint and jasmine. It is wonderfully concentrated and expansive on the palate, displaying opulent fruit richness together with creamy texture and savoury complexity, firmly structured by bright acidity. $49.00. www.manowarvineyards.co.nz.
