This is another of those quiet legends: once people try it they always go back. This may be because it is so distinctive, with lush stone fruit against fresh acidity along with an oily-mineral character/texture. From one of New Zealand's strangest vineyards -- on the tiny island of Ponui, just off the coast of Waiheke -- this compelling wine always offers a certain X factor.

Overview

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Lush, honeyed pinot gris with ripe tropical fruit, guava, peach and mango flavours. Moderately sweet but not at all cloying thanks to a backbone of fine acidity.14/3/2019." Drink 2019 to 2023

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"Powerful and sumptuous, this is reminiscent of a top-notch Alsace pinot gris. Gorgeous aromas of baked pear, mango, honey, warm spice and potpourri lead to a concentrated palate that is plush and delicious. It is wonderfully textured and magnificently fruited, brilliantly enhanced by elegant sweetness and juicy acidity, finishing persistent and creamy. Grapes were grown on their estate vineyards in Waiheke and Ponui Islands. Style: Medium. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2022
