2018 Lionnet Cornas Terre Brulee

95 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A superb new Cornas from a producer who is exciting, though hardly a new comer on the scene. The Lionnet family have been vignerons here since 1575, and now produce exceptional and undervalued Cornas under their own labels. Certified organic with a low-intervention ethos at every stage, the flagship Terre Brulee label represents a blend of the older vines (40-100 years) on their most favoured sites. Extraordinary Syrah to decant now or cellar, the Lionnet is extreme value.

Its Origins

Domaine Lionnet is an estate with older vines that has been in family hands since 1575. Run since 2003 by daughter Corinne Lionnet and her husband Ludovic Izerable, their ethic of extreme care and non-intervention allows them to balance traditional values with modern techniques of quality control. "A traditional Cornas domaine [where] quality is rising as the wines have become fresher. It has been organic since 2007, officially organic since 2012. Daughter Corinne is encouraging greater bottling and small tidy-ups are occurring in the cellar - glassing the interior of the vats, for instance. Whole bunch fermentation, no cultured yeasts - leave-alone winemaking - mean the wine is full with apparent tannins when young. It is a genuine drop of country wine. The first vintage for Corinne and Ludovic was 2003. Since 2008 one hectare of Cornas - from massale Syrah cuttings - has been added on Saint-Pierre, quite high up. This now forms the second Cornas called Pur Granit, and given the combination of young vines and altitude, it is a streamlined, direct wine, with good clarity." Drinkrhone.com

What The Critics Say

95/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Opaque violet color. Precise, mineral-accented scents of blackberry, cassis and exotic spices are accompanied by a slowly emerging floral nuance. Sappy and energetic on the palate, displaying sharp delineation to its concentrated black/blue fruit, floral pastille, olive and allspice flavors. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with intense mineral thrust, a hint of candied violet and subtly chewy, harmonious tannins that make a late appearance." Drink 2026 - 2036

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2015 vintage)

"A terrific wine, the 2015 Cornas Terre Brulee combines smoky notes of grilled plums and meat in a full-bodied format. It's richly tannic and velvety at the same time, with a finish that's simultaneously drying (from tannins) and mouthwatering (from juicy fruit). Farmed organically, vinified with stems in concrete and aged in used, large-format oak, Cornas doesn't get more authentic (or better) than this!"

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW (2015 vintage)

"Blackish crimson. Salty/treacly nose with masses of fruit. Is this really Cornas?! Masses of pleasure. Most impressive! And not a silly price."
