2019 Johner Lime Hill Wairarapa Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Now under the B.Wine label, Lime Hill Vineyard began as a joint wine venture of Karl Johner of Johner Estate at Gladstone with his winemaker Raphael Burki. "Raphael and Christine Burki are Wairarapa's newest wine label and cellar door B. wine creators and owners. The Swiss-born Kiwi couple travels back and forth between New Zealand and Switzerland for vintages each year, rich with insight from both the new and old world, expressing a personal perspective of Martinborough and the Wairarapa... The wines are small in production, only available at their Martinborough cellar door, a handful of fine wine establishments and online, so make sure you pop in their cellar door if you are near. Opens Thursday to Monday 11-4 pm, address 45 Kitchener Street, Martinborough 5711." Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
What The Critics Say
96/100 Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
"Deep, ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is ethereal and enticing, deep aromas of herb, dried hibiscus, interweave dark cherries, plums, strawberries and a mineral lifting. Medium-bodied, sweet aromas of dark cherries, young plums and ripe strawberries enriched by dark herb, liquorice and spice, followed by earth and mineral crunch. The aromas are harmonious and alluring; sweet fruit, rich herb and dried floral have great intensity and perfume. Velvety tannin provides a good grip, entwined with minerals and spice. This is an immensely perfumed Pinot Noir with excellent concentration and elegance, on a velvety mouthfeel and a long-lasting finish. Match with roasted pigeons and duck over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from Lime Hill, clone 5, 115, 667, 777, 10/5 and Abel, fermented to 13.5% alc, aged 12 months in barrel on fine lees, 20% new oak. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) Dec 2021 RRP $56

"Noir made a very good impression. Planted in 2013 on a limestone-based hillside, it is a ripe yet elegant expression, offering both herbal and smoky characters alongside the ripe, polished fruit. There's attractive sinew here, a combination of the Wairarapa's natural acidity and the savory tannins that are a part of the region's appeal. There's a distinctive chalkiness on the refreshing, drawn-out finish. The lengthy conclusion fills the mouth with an attractive fragrance reminiscent of violets, black tea, plum and festive spices. I look forward to discovering more from this site."
