2018 Lamont Central Otago Pinot Noir

95 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
Grown in Central's warmest sub-region, Bendigo, the Lamont reaps all the benefits of this climate. But experienced winemaker Criag Gasson ensures that this ripeness does not dominate but retains wonderful integration and balance. A delicate aromatic, perfectly keyed freshness and a fine, spicy line of tannin ensure that this already delicious wine will only improve with age. One of the best for this price out of Central.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Lamont is the brand of Craig and Angela Gasson, Craig a viticulturist who established 12.15 ha of vineyards with the McLachlan family in Bendigo, who planted in 1999 as one of the founders in the district. Working on-site and becoming intimate with the vines and land up to 2007, Craig and Angela took sabbatical overseas, gaining additional experience in the U.K. and the exciting Okanagan district of Canada, to return to Lamont to continue their work making the Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wines even more expressive of their provenance. The Lamont wines are single-vineyard sourced, from a 4.5 ha block off Loop Road, organic since 2009 and now with BioGro certification. The site has the varieties matched specifically to particular soil profiles, and the viticulture is precision-managed to account for their requirements. Craig is personally responsible for the winemaking, and still involved in the viticulture.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"From the Bendigo subregion. Ripe, attractive pinot noir with dark cherry, plum, anise, spice and subtle oak flavours. An appealing wine in a hands-off style, with a silken texture and great purity. Approachable now but no rush 20/12/2019." Drink 2019 - 2027

Excellent to Outstanding, Otago Daily Times
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

:Made with 4 different clones of Pinot Noir and 25% new French Barrigues. There’s no mistaking the immediacy of pinosity on the nose with a blend of fruit, soil, more fruit, barrel spices and intriguing if not seductive complexity. On the palate - firm, dry, poised, young. There is a core of fruit with contrasting tension from firm yet finer tannins - chalky and precise. A lengthy finish, persistent and complex flavours. A wine that simply needs time to harmonise all the important elements. Best drinking from 2021 through 2026+." RRP $45.00
