A delicious but 'serious' Pinot Gris from the masters at Kumeu River. They are world famous for Chardonnay but their Pinot Gris is also a high-achiever. Close to dry but richly textural, Kumeu has been doing this somewhat Alsatian style for years...from vines that only get older and better. With no oak but good lees contact, this is mouth-filling and weighty with beautiful perfume as well. Versatile and tasty - serious gear for Gris lovers and everyone else.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

In 1938 Maté Brajkovich arrived in New Zealand with his parents, who settled in Kumeu and in 1944 bought a small vineyard which would later become Kumeu River wines. For a few decades Maté mostly made simple fortified and sparkling wines. It wasn't until 1982 however, when Matés son Michael took over, that the wines would really start to turn heads. Michael and his siblings began to transform the vineyard and vinification practices to more considered, traditional ways, with hand harvesting, improved drainage, judicious use of oak and only using the wild yeast present in the vineyard to bring a sharper definition of terroir into the wines. Matés vineyard is the original land bought in 1944, re-planted by Maté just before his death with low-yielding Mendoza clone Chardonnay in 1990.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell (2016 vintage)

A very appealing pinot gris with pear, spicy apple and ginger flavours. It's a very tactile wine, with good weight and a creamy texture. A hint of sweetness is perfectly balanced by fine, drying tannins that promote a drying finish.

18+/20 Raymond Chan (2016 vintage)

"Full straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale edged. This has an elegantly proportioned nose with softly presented but fresh fruit aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with piquant yellow florals entwined with nutty and honied elements, and hints of minerals. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is harmoniously presented with gently layered ripe, white and yellow stonefruits entwined with yellow florals and honied nuances. The mouthfeel is rich with a soft unctuousness balanced by light, lacy acidity and fine phenolic textures. The wine flows smoothly to a soft and sustained, light-nuanced finish. This is a harmoniously layered, gently rich, dry Pinot Gris with stonefruit, floral and honied flavours on a balanced, fresh mouthfeel. Match with Asian fare over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked Kumeu fruit indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc. and 5.9 g/L RS. Feb 2018 RRP $27.00."
