2018 Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules

A Premier Cru Burgundy of real richness and character. The Clos des Ursules is a walled vineyard within the Vignes Franches Premier Cru. This site faces the morning and early afternoon sun on the lower slopes of the Montagne St Desire, near Pommard to the west of Beaune town. Here a slow but full ripening allows fruit to reach a fairly rich and assertive expression, which will age for a considerable time but deliver plenty of pleasure in the nearer term as well.

Its Origins

In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses. Jadot’s winemaking team, now led by Technical Director Frédéric Barnier, has maintained a balance of tradition and technology in winemaking that allows Jadot’s wines to express the subtle differences between terroirs that are the essence of fine Burgundy. Though officially retired in 2013, esteemed winemaker Jacques Lardière continues to work in an advisory role and on special projects. Founded in 1859, the house has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots.

What The Critics Say

96/100 The Somm Journal

"I’m getting a lot of beautiful red fruit, elegant red currant, red cherries, [and] also a little bit of sanguine character, a wet metal like you’ve bit your tongue, a little bloody. It’s very pointed and expressive. Brilliant aromas of summer cherry and a rose garden precede vivid glossiness on the palate, where mocha-tinged earthiness reveals white pepper and cinnamon-covered raspberry. There’s an intensity midway that creates tension while ushering in a juicy flow of spiced pomegranate on the finish."

95/100 James Suckling

"A tight, savory red with ripe strawberry, cherry and raspberry character. Some chocolate and hazelnut undertones. It’s full-bodied and layered with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. White pepper just at the end. Better after 2022."

92-94/100 Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) is the most reserved of these Beaune premiers crus, unwinding in the glass with notes of ripe cherries, wild berries, dark chocolate, dried flowers and a deft touch of spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with succulent acids, powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish. This is very promising."
