A super value Shiraz from one of the leading small players based in the Barossa. A blend of fruit from some of their best vineyard sources (these ones mainly in the Eden Vale), this classic of the Head house style offers a New Barossa mix of richness with brightness, harmony and flow. Delicious quality and stonking value.

Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s, Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

93/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"High perfume, blueberry coulis, blackberry, spice and sage, ironstone. Medium-bodied, succulent, intense fruit of perfume and weight, dark chocolate tannin, savoury elements, very long fresh finish. Super vintage. Puppy like in enthusiasm as at now. Almost 94 points, though that’s kind of arbitrary. There’s an increasing move up to the Eden Valley for Head Wines. This is 80% Eden." Drink 2019 - 2029

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Deep purple/red colour, very youthful and vibrant. The bouquet is rich and sweetly ripe, with some notes of violet and blueberry, while the taste is focused and intense, bright and very vibrant. A smashingly good example of this everyman wine. Fruit sweetness, power and structure. The depth of flavour has gone to a higher level. Great value. (80% Eden Valley; 10% whole-bunch; 10% new oak) 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2033
