Its Origins
Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
95/100 Huon Hooke
"Very deep, bright purple/red colour. Youthfully bright but subdued aromas of violet and mixed spices, fruit driving the show. The palate is tightly-focused and firm, a clenched fist, with dramatic drive and intensity. Superb flavour, freshness and vitality, with a lingering after-palate. (A new wine, all Eden Valley. Vine age ranges 35 to 100 years old. 20% new oak) 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2034
