Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

91/100 Huon Hooke

"(Eden Valley & Barossa Valley) Medium to deep, bright red/purple hue leads into a subtly earthy, spicy bouquet and a lovely elegant, medium-bodied but intensely-flavoured palate. There's a firm peppery grip and a hint of bitterness at the close. (This is 90% Eden Valley, including declassified Stonegarden, and includes 8% mataro) 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2031

96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner (2016 vintage)

"From the same vineyard source as Ancestor Vine, but no new oak. 5% mataro inclusion; 20% whole-bunches, wild yeast, plunged daily for 2 weeks, 17 months in seasoned 600l barrels. A glorious grenache that effortlessly stays in the savoury spectrum without losing its heart of excellent raspberry-red-plum. Heady aromatics of Middle Eastern spices especially sumac, plus Sichuan pepper, rose hips and warm earth; pristine flavours sashay across the medium-bodied palate, taking the spongy tannins and talc-like acidity all in its stride." Drink by 2030
