A perfectly styled Pinot Gris from Waipara's aromatic masters, Greystone. This wine has a serious track record for generous and semi-opulent Pinot Gris, with a balanced weight, a slightly oily texture and off-dry freshness that brings everything into perfect harmony. Satisfying and very, very classy, this is one of the very best at the price.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. They planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings they could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Raymond Chan (2017)

"Bright, even straw-yellow colour with pale golden hues. The nose is softly rich and concentrated with well-packed aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with honied notes and yellow florals, and a suggestion of spice. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has soft, rich flavours of white and yellow stonefruits and subtle notes of honey and exotic florals. The palate has a rounded and unctuous texture with balanced, integrated acidity, underlined by some alcoholic power and drive. The wine flows smoothly to a lingering finish of stonefruits and honey. This is a softly rich and unctuous dry Pinot Gris with stonefruit, honey and floral flavours with good drive and smooth flowing linearity. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 3-4 years. Fruit picked over 4 passes, fermented in tank with 15% in seasoned French oak puncheons and barriques to 13.5% alc. and 4.1 g/L RS, wine aged 4 months on lees undergoing batonnage. Certified AsureQuality organic. 18.5/20 Nov 2017 RRP $27.00"

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017)

"Powerful and generously expressed, the opulent bouquet shows grilled pineapple, baked pear, mandarin and floral characters with nuances of spice and candied ginger. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and fleshy mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and perfectly pitched acidity. Flavoursome and gratifying. At its best: now to 2021. $27.00. Certified organic."

92/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier (2017)

"Fragrant, varietal and pure with abundant fruit and spice aromas of Gris – honeysuckle, peach, white peach and quince. On the palate – equally engaging with a core of tree and white fleshed stone fruit flavours; some residual sweetness and plenty of acidity bring balance and a long harmonious finish. Drink now and through 2022."
