Great discount on this rich but refined Gris from Waipara which took out a top 10 slot in Decanter's World Pinot Gris Tasting- the only gris outside of Alsace to do so! .A favourite of Greystone winemaker Dom Maxwell (NZ Winemaker of the Year 2018), who is a master of this gently unctuous -- yet mineral and delicate -- aromatic style. The "Sand Dollar" is a step up to the single-vineyard range, named after the sea fossils that appear in these calcerous Waipara soils. Gently sweet but nuanced and harmonious, the renowned Sand Dollar is a steal for this heavy discount.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. They planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings they could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Dry, tasty and textural pinot gris with ripe pear, toast, apple and brioche flavours. A classy wine that includes a portion of barrel fermented and matured wine to add a pleasing texture and additional layers of flavours. 20/5/2017."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2016 vintage)

"From their estate vineyard, the wine was partially fermented in barrels with lees maturation. The wine is filled with attractive apricot, baked pear, rockmelon and spice characters with nuances of almond and oatmeal notes. The palate delivers excellent concentration and expansive mouthfeel, backed by rich texture and seamlessly integrated acidity. This dry pinot gris is extremely long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2021. $30.00. www.greystonewines.co.nz. April 2017."
