For such an important Yarra Valley producer, you’d think that someone had spent their whole life building Giant Steps. If fact it is just the latest brainchild of Phil Sexton, an old hand in the Australian wine industry and also an ex brewer with such credits to his name as co-founding the famous Aussie craft brewer, Little Creatures. Along with the more commercially orientated sister brand ‘Innocent Bystander’, the increasingly lauded Giant Steps label focusses on a range of closely managed, contract single vineyards and regional wines exploring the terroir of Yarra - one of Australia’s most promising areas for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Serious, complex chardonnay with concentration and weight but with a rich, silken texture. Still quite youthful with the sort of structure that would respond well to at least a couple more years in bottle, although the wine can be appreciated now. 03 JAN 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025
95/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"I’m not sure if I’m reviewing the new Giant Steps releases, or Mike is. He certainly did a whole lot more typing than me, and looked quite serious while doing it. I think this was my favourite of the Chardonnay releases. A little struck match, melon, spiced oatmeal. Big flavour, powerful fruit with a lime drizzle, acidity to belt it in, good grip and texture, tang and brightness on a long finish. Such a good thing to drink." Drink 2019 - 2024+
93/100 Decanter, Tina Gellie
"There is incredible depth of quality in Yarra Chardonnay: Mount Mary, Mac Forbes, TarraWarra, Yabby Lake, Yarra Yering, Soumah, Santolin… Giant Steps vinifies all its four fab single-vineyard wines the same way (wild-yeast, 20% new puncheons, lees stirring, eight months’ ageing). This is broad, juicy and rich with peach and orange flavours, direct acidity and creamy oak spice." Drink 2020 - 2030
