A new import for us, this Ernest Allen Shiraz is ridiculously rich and succulent. The finest parcels of Gemtree's organic fruit was hand-harvested at full ripeness, then gently fermented and pressed, remaining in parcels, for period of 16 months in French oak to enhance sweetness, roundness and balance. With stellar ratings, this style is generous when young but will age seriously well. A local favourite over there, this is usually a cellar door sell-out. Find out why!

Its Origins

"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

92/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke

"Very deep, dark, brooding purple/red/black colour. The wine is full-bodied and robustly-structured, with masses of tannin. It's concentrated, if not that detailed or refined. It will take some age with ease, and possibly reward with greater complexity in time. 01 JAN 2020." Drink 2022 - 2035

95/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2017 vintage)

"20-120yo vines, sophisticated sorting of bunches and/or berries, open-fermented, matured in French barriques (45% new) for 18 months. Opaque colour; ultra full-bodied, tannins stitched through black fruits. Very good wine, but has to be given more time to open up and welcome visitors." Drink by 2047
