The Haag family has been in wine for just a little while - since 1605, to be precise - and over that time they have been instrumental in the development of Brauneberger, an area that has been recognised as one of the Mosel’s best since the sixth century. At the helm today is the youthful Oliver Haag, whose father Wilhelm (son of Fritz) became recognised as a Riesling world leader, awarded the deceptively simple title of Winegrower of the Year in 1994. Oliver himself has at his back a full oenological training as well as extensive experience with a number of leading Riesling producers. With results so superb they effectively define a modern classic style of Mosel Riesling, it seems clear that the Haag family’s future in wine may be as sure as it’s past.
What The Critics Say
96/100 View From the Cellar, John Gillman
"The 2018 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Goldkapsel Auslese is even a hair better this year, as it shows
just a touch more exotic creaminess on the attack, simply stunning backend mineral drive and
great acids for the vintage. The bouquet is celestial in its blend of lime, mirabelle, pear, a lovely
foundation of slate, honeycomb, just a whisper of mossiness and notes of lilacs and violets in the
upper register. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure, focused and impeccably balanced, with
superb acids and grip, laser-like focus and a very, very long and complex finish. This wine just
dances across the palate." Drink 2026 - 2085
17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding
"Inviting fumy nose of spontaneous fermentation that delays the sweetness initially, opening up to grapefruit zest. On the palate, very sweet, tarte Tatin and intense apricots. Concentration but not yet showing much complexity, as you might expect in such a young, sweet wine. (JH)."
98/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2017 vintage)
"The 2017 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #12 (Gold Capsule) is concentrated and fresh, with candied grapefruit aromas on the citric nose. This is a dense, textured, beautifully lush, refined, racy-piquant and highly stimulating Auslese in the most delicate (and delicious) way. This is richness balanced on a tightrope! There is so much tension, finesse and sensuality here but also concentration, density and expression. This is a fulminant, highly finessed and delicate Auslese that was picked with the regular Spätlese and the Auslese #10 but contains the botrytized grapes (although the botrytis part of the berries is only 30% to 40%). Tasted in March and April 2019." Drink 2020 - 2060
