Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage
"Very pure and bright aromas that evoke botanicals: freshly sliced apple, hints of cucumber and a touch of mint. A Nashi pear flavoured palate is full bodied and seamlessly balanced with burnt citrus peel and cardamom; again highlighting the exotic fruit spectrum. The dry finish and acidity is perfectly balanced with the textural and enduring mouthfeel."
951/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)
"Bone-dry, mouth-puckering riesling with lime, white flowers and chalky mineral flavours. The wine has an ethereal texture. Knife-edged acidity helps drive a very lengthy finish. Delicious now (try it with fresh oysters garnished with a squeeze of lemon) but may become even more interesting with bottle age 18/1/2018."
