A top-notch Chardonnay from a special place in the Felton Road holdings. Block 6 is an elevated site of free-draining lochar gravels, where low fertility and a steeper north-facing aspect ensure perfect conditions to produce ripe but elegant Chardonnay wines. An exceptional wine that is rarely in retail — the Block 6 Chardonnay will sell out in a jiffy!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Tasted alongside the Block 2 chardonnay, this wine is notably riper, richer and fleshier with stone fruit, peach and nectarine and a saline character that is more obvious on the aroma, with an appealing suggestion of white flowers. It is softer and more accessible than Block 2 but has similar power and intensity. A charmer 13 OCT 2019." Drink 2019 - 2026

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Fruit for this wine comes from the Elms Vineyard in Bannockburn. Aromas of pure fresh fruits including apple, white peach and baked pear. Fragrant too with a blossom layer then gentle spicy wood scents with old wood spices, a raw sugar moment and vanilla. There’s no mistaking the core of minerality with a fine stone quality. Complex. Dry on the palate with medium+ weight pushed along with a gentle warmth from the alcohol then flavours of pear and white stone fruit, apple and white flowers then spices of oak. A complex delicious wine drinking well from today and through 2024+."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Organic and biodynamic. Subtle stony citrus and green fruits. Restrained oak spice. Chewy and deep on the palate but not heavy. Serious, savoury but with a core of fruit. Long, fresh finish. (JH)." Drink 2020 - 2028
