A luscious and sweetish style from Felton's mature vines. The word 'tension' comes up a lot for this wine, but after extensive testing we've experienced no nervous side-effects whatsoever. It seems the word refers to the wine's edgy balance of sweetness and crisp mineral acidity. Lush-fruited, floral and stony-tasting, Felton Road's classy biodynamic winemaking shows once again why they're on top. And all this comes with less alcohol than some beers these days!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on the current 2018 vintage

"Ripe melon and nectarine with underlyingcitrus notes on the nose. The intense aromatics are echoed in the mouth with the addition of spring blossom. The initial wave of residual sugar on the luscious palate is quickly tempered by the bright acidity. It’s a knife edge balance that’s so critical to give the wine such poise and presence. Fine, detailed and zingy."

97/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Extraordinary riesling, with 63 g/l of residual sugar beautifully restrained by taut, ripe acidity to give the wine exquisite tension. Lime, floral and mineral flavours. Delicious now but will age well. Impossible to fault 18/1/2018."
