A superbly rich yet refined Chardonnay from the famous Puligny-Montrachet. The Les Referts zone is fairly low on the hill and on the border with Meursault. It therefore retains the floral finesse and allure of Montrachet while, in the low-lying warmth and on a flatter aspect, gaining much of the breadth and sappiness of the neighbouring Meursault style. Serious satisfaction for lovers of the classics, the Les Referts will drink soon or improve for some years.

Its Origins

Domaine Faiveley is one of the biggest domaines (115ha) in Burgundy and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by the first François, Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, François who has recently retired and now his son Erwan, born in 1979. The change of generation, enhanced by the arrival of Bernard Hervet as Managing Director, is clear warning of the intention to dynamise the business. Already there has been a notable expansion of vineyards under Faiveley’s control. Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best. Their concentration and richness are rarely equalled.

What The Critics Say

16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Barrel sample. Invitingly spicy, creamy aroma. Smells of classy oak but also of lemon and clementine fruit. Fragrant and open. Spiced and creamy on the palate too. Tightly structured but still generous in fruit. (JH)." Drink 2022 - 2027

90-93/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer (2014 vintage)

"(60% malo; Faiveley worked these vines and vinified the wine for the first time; the yield here was 50 hectoliters per hectare, making this the only vineyard near the limit in 2014): Light yellow with a green tinge. Deep, bright aromas of fresh peach, spices and flowers. Wonderfully sweet and generous but nicely balanced too, with harmonious acidity framing and carrying the flavors of fruit salad and hazelnut."

90-92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows (2014 vintage)

"An expressive and clearly ripe nose features notes of lilac, acacia blossom, pear and white peach that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is excellent richness and volume to the mouth coating and sleekly powerful flavors that deliver excellent length and good if not truly special complexity on the equally well-balanced finale." Drink 2021+
