A deliciously vibrant white from an extremely rare variety: this would be value at twice the price! By turns of accident and anecdote, legendary winemaker of Esk Valley Gordon Russell first chose this variety for planting in 1998, being dry-farmed since 2007. Originally from Madiera but more often made in a dry style in Australia, in this climate the grape results in a vibrantly fresh, mineral-driven wine with aromatic green and lime-tropical fruit that is oddly like the best qualities of more typical New Zealand whites. A new one for us and stunning value, this Verdelho is a must try!

Its Origins

The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"Sourced from grapes grown in the Gimblett Gravels district, the wine offers awesome drinkability. It is succulent but not overtly fruity, and shows rich texture without being heavy. Aromas of ripe stone fruit, mandarin, rockmelon and floral lead to a generously flavoured palate that is silky and persistent. A very friendly wine for any time of the day."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)

"The 2017 vintage (4*) was fermented in a 3:1 mix of tanks and barrels. Full-bodied and vibrantly fruity, it has fresh, strong tropical-fruit flavours, showing a touch of complexity, and a dry (3.3 grams/litre of residual sugar), appetisingly crisp finish."
