A great special on this popular Bordeaux blend from the Hawkes Bay. The Phant Rouge medium-bodied with focussed dark-red fruit, along with a fine structure and toasty oak profile like a very good Bordeaux. One of the best dinner reds we could imagine for that price — and a steal at this heavy discount. Grab some while stocks last!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Delightfully fruited and inviting with dark plum, blackcurrant, dried herb and almond characters, it's succulent and supple displaying rounded mouthfeel and fine texture. Well structured by fine chalky tannins, finishing delicately dry and persistent. At its best: now to 2025. $26.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. April 2021." Drink 2021 - 2025

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Aromas and flavours of wild forest berries, plums, savoury bitter chocolate, black currant and toasty wood spices of oak. Youthful and quite complex. On the palate - vibrant, tense and very engaging with texture from firm chalky tannins and medium+ acidity, a core of light and dark red berry fruits that reflect the nose, toasty barrel spices with clove and vanilla then sour raspberry and black cherry. A lovely wine that should be enjoyed with food. Best drinking from 2022 through 2028. Decant for service. 92 Points – Premium."

41/2 Stars The Wine Writer (2017 vintage)

"Juicy berries, plum, bramble and smoky oak are found on the palate, along with grippy but integrated tannins and a sustained finish. If you take the time to decant this wine, you will be rewarded."
