Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage
A soft peach colour with a golden hue. A pretty aromatic nose with notes of white blossoms, melon, peach, nectarine and a hint of white strawberry. A round mouthfeel, with a smooth and ethereal texture. This wine is bone dry with delicately balanced acidity. A lingering note of strawberry and thyme blossom. Perfect as an aperitif. No snacks required. Pairs well with halloumi or goat’s cheese salads or lightly grilled fish and seafood and melon with prosciutto.
90/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier (2017 vintage)
“Light translucent salmon core colour with aromas and flavours of mostly Pinot Noir – like fruits with crushed strawberry and red apple skin. A light and refreshing rose petal moment adds charm and elegance. Dry finish with lingering light red fruit flavours and a lick of minerality. Drink 2017 - 2019
