Richly sweet but fresh, this complex single vineyard white is from German Riesling master Doctor Loosen. Ripe fruits and lush sweetness balance against deep mineral influence: the Urziger Wurgarten ('spice garden') vineyard is rich in red volcanic soils, which both drain freely and imbue a 'zippy acidity' and spicy-mineral intensity to the wine. With aging potential so long the details are largely subjective, this is wonderful wine and deeply serious for the price.

Its Origins

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2017 vintage)

"The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese is clear, precise and fine on the crunchy/slatey nose. Lush and dense on the palate, this is a concentrated yet clear, refined and very elegant Auslese with good mineral structure and a salty-piquant finish with herbal and floral notes. Gorgeous."

94/100 Vinous, David Schildknecht (2017 vintage)

"Strawberry in both jammy and fresh guise, along with overripe honeydew melon and a cooling infusion of mint, informs the nose and the creamy, delicate palate, joined there by a wafting suggestion of liquid honeysuckle and freesia. A hint of caramel creeps into the billowing finish, but so does an infusion of fresh lime, with a result that is richly multilayered yet transparent to slate underpinnings and downright refreshing in a way Auslese too seldom is." Drink 2017 - 2027

94/100 Wine Enthusiast (2017 vintage)

"While the nose suggests spicy earth tones, crushed stone and saffron, lavishly sun-kissed guava, pink grapefruit and peach abound on the palate. Honeyed and silken, it clings on the palate but finishes with a vibrating, steely tang. Lovely already but it will improve for decades."
