Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy - both of whom were key players in establishing the quality of Marlborough's Cloudy Bay Vineyard. Their philosophy is total involvement from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines. Fruit for their wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage

"Pale straw in colour. Aroma: Gunflint, smoke and gravelly tones sit alongside the citrus core of fruit flavours. The extended barrel ageing of 18 months shows with nutty flavours and creamy texture. Palate: The hallmarks of Dog Point chardonnay are ever present here with pure saline and crisp palate structure. This vintage will have the ability to age well. Cellaring Seven to ten years. Hand picked and gently pressed straight to barrel (10% new) for eighteen months. No juice clarification with 100% wild primary and secondary fermentations. Bottled without fining and with only minimal filtration."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Savoury, complex chardonnay, with less emphasis on citrus and grapefruit fruit flavours and more on struck flint, fireworks, biscuit and brioche-like lees character. Good acidity and an appealing texture. 05 OCT 2019."

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 vintage)

Bold and expressive bouquet - no mistaking the white smoke of toasty oak with baking spices, vanilla and a leesy lactic core. Aromas of baked yellow stone fruits, baked apple and grapefruit. On the palate - dry, weighty and creamy textures, flavours of baked orchard fruits, toasty oak with fine tannins, medium+ acidity and long satisfying finish. A really lovely wine with just enough complexity to beckon a second glass. Drink 2019 - 2023
