Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Jamie Goode

Merlot-dominant blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Fresh and focused with a lovely gravelly edge to the lovely expressive red and black fruits. Its really assured and harmonious with mid weight fruit working in harmony with the structure.

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"A merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon blend from the Gimblett Gravels district. Bright, fruit-focused red wine with red fruits, cedar and spicy oak flavours. An elegant wine that offers great value at this price 23/5/2019." Drink 2019 - 2023

97/100 Decanter (2016 vintage)

"This was a wine which convinced our judges that all the hard work that has gone into Bordeaux varieties (alongside Syrah) in Gimblett Gravels is beginning to pay off. It's a very dark black-red in colour, and the 63% of Merlot sings out in its soft, seductive black-cherry and black-plum fruits. The soft wealth on the palate is very impressive too, without any rigid acidity and backed, in this case, by some discreetly textured but impressively flavoured tannins (a touch of graphite and coal dust). It's sappy and vinous towards the end: real 'pleasure wine', yet never simple. Drink 2019-2025"
