Its Origins
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Magnificently composed and expressed, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, raspberry, violet, olive, anise and spicy oak characters, leading to a gracefully powerful palate that's superbly concentrated with outstanding depth and persistency. It's multi-layered and lingering with symphonic flavours. At its best: 2022 to 2030. $150.00. www.craggyrange.com. March 2020." Drink 2022 - 2030
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)
"Intense, powerful, flagship pinot noir with red-fleshed plum, violet, liquorice, anise, savoury, dried herb flavours and a strong influence of smoky French oak. A very impressive wine that clearly needs time to integrate and develop even greater complexity. Aeration is recommended. 27/7/2019." Drink 2019 - 2027
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)
"The delicious 2017 vintage (5*) is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir, estate-grown at Te Muna, on the edge of Martinborough. Hand-picked, it was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (28 per cent new). Deep, bright ruby, it is mouthfilling and savoury, with generous cherry, plum and spice flavours, oak complexity and ripe, supple tannins. A very refined, youthful, harmonious red, it's well worth cellaring to 2022+."
