In 1986 Tim Turvey purchased a property at Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they hand grafted and planted the first vines in the winter of 1988. Clearview Estate Winery Ltd was established for the first red wine vintage in 1989. Vineyard plantings continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew. The Estate grows 11 grape varieties from 19.4 hectares (48 acres) of Te Awanga vineyards. They intensively manage and prune their vines for low yields of quality fruit. The seaside location has a moderating influence and they often enjoy an extended ripening period well into autumn. The clay and loam soils sit over deep beds of free draining river shingle. Leased land at Gimblett Road provides Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
What The Critics Say
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)
"This Hawke's Bay winery has a reputation for powerful Chardonnays, and top vintages of this good value label are no exception. Estate-grown and hand-harvested on the coast at Te Awanga, the 2017 vintage (4.5*) was fermented and matured for nine months in seasoned French oak barrels (one and two years old) and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, with a fragrant, complex bouquet, it is mouthfilling and youthful, with loads of vibrant, peachy, slightly toasty flavour, a hint of butterscotch, balanced acidity and a dry, tight finish. Already drinking well, it should be at its best mid 2019+."
91/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 vintage)
"Creamy, nutty, buttery and boldly fruity Chardonnay. These aromas follow through to the palate wrapped in a big creamy texture with some oak spices and a little wood tannin. Medium acidity, medium++ weight. Peaches and nectarines, apple and vanilla. Drinking nicely today. Best from early 2019 through 2024."
18.5+/20 Raymond Chan (2017 vintage)
"Bright, full, even, light golden-yellow colour. The nose is fresh and aromatic with ripe yellow stonefruits, citrus fruit and tropical fruit notes harmoniously entwined with a layer of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak, along with subtle nuances of complexing flintiness. This shows lovely balance. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich with mouthfilling flavours of ripe tropical fruit and yellow stonefruits melded with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak, unfolding a little toast and flint and butterscotch MLF elements. The palate is luscious with a rounded heart and integrated acidity, the flavours revealing more detail and interest as the wine flows a fine-textured line. The wine carries to a long, lingering finish of citrus fruit, nuts and oak toast. This is a harmonious and balanced, mouthfilling Chardonnay with rich, ripe stonefruit and tropical fruits with creamy, nutty oak and complex, layered detailing. Match with roasted and grilled poultry, pork and veal over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked fruit, WBP, and fully barrel-fermented to 13.2% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 1 y.o. and 2 y.o. French oak with batonnage and 100% MLF. 18.5+/20 May 2018."
