En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2021. Les Cruzelles is owned by Denis Durantou and located within sight from his famous Pomerol estate, L'Eglise Clinet. Like a big brother to the super-value La Chenade, also grown on this estate, this grand vin of Les Cruzelles offers serious depth and potential as a result of the site's rich, Pomerol-like soils of clay and gravel. A serious prospect for what seems like a strategically low pricing, the undervalued Les Cruzelles is a wine to watch. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2021.

Overview

Grape

80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc

Its Origins

Chateau Les Cruzelles in Lalande de Pomerol is owned by Denis Durantou, who purchased Chateau Les Cruzelles in 2000 and is better known for owning one of the top estates in Pomerol, Chateau LEglise Clinet. Located in the commune of Neac, not far from his Pomerol estate, the terroir of Chateau Les Cruzelles shares many similarities in terroir with his Pomerol chateau, due to its rich, clay and gravel soil. The 10 hectare vineyard of Chateau Les Cruzelles is planted to 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. This could be the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in the appellation of Lalande de Pomerol. There is a second wine, Chateau La Chenade. The grapes for La Chenade comes from a combination of the estate’s young vines and the vines planted in the terroir with more sand and gravel, as well as from purchased fruit. La Chenade also includes more Cabernet Franc in the blend to give it more structure. La Chenade is aged in an average of 25% new, French oak barrels. On average, the production of Chateau Les Cruzelles is close to 1,200 cases of wine per vintage.

What The Critics Say

90-93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Les Cruzelles emerges from older vines Denis Durantou's Lalande De Pomerol property. Clay/gravelly soils in this parcels give the Cruzelles a darker fruit profile and greater breadth as well as more tannic clout than its sibling. Inky, dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice all develop in the glass. This is an especially powerful, structured expression of Lalande de Pomerol, and it works beautifully." Drink 2022 - 2038

91-93/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"From the team of Denis Durantou, notes of cassis, violets, tobacco, and earth all emerge from the 2018 Château Les Cruzelles, which is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc brought up in 40% new barrels. It's medium to full-bodied, elegant, and weightless on the palate, with loads to love. I also suspect it will represent a stunning value for true wine lovers (and drinkers) out there."

17++/20 Matthew Jukes

"With ‘sweeter’ fruit notes on the nose than both Saintayme and La Chenade, this is initially a more flattering wine, but the tannins swoop in and there is a very dry finish here which shows smokiness and tobacco tones, making this an exotic wine. It will need a decade, but I anticipate a complete and complex wine in time. (80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) | 40% new oak | 14.5% alc | The Merlot was picked between the 18th and 25th September and the Cabernet Franc was picked on the 28th September | 31500 bottles were produced."
