En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2021. Located next door to its owner, the famous Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Duhart-Milon has for centuries been regarded as Lafite's un-official second wine. But it has also built a reputation as one of the best, and a 'model' Pauillac  sturdy and refined, structured and dense, with a toasty and 'sappy' perfume ascribed by tradition to this famous terroir. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2021.

Its Origins

Like much of Pauillac, the estate later known as Duhart-Milon was first put under vine in the early 18th century, at the behest of the ravenously successful Chateau Lafite. Directly adjoining the west edge of today’s Chateau Lafite Rothchild, Duhart-Milon’s vineyards were noted for quality. Early on it had early become effectively Lafite’s ‘second’ wine, and in the 1855 classification it was recognised as the only 4th Growth in Pauillac. By this time it was owned by the Casteja family, under the inherited Chateau name, Duhart-Milon. In 1937 inheritance and ownership issues saw the estate sold, leading to a period of instability and a drop in quality. It wasn’t until 1962 that the Rothschild family were able to buy their neighbour and institute an ambitious plan of vineyard overhaul and development, along with new winemaking facilities in addition to the benefits of Lafite’s knowledge and in-house cooperage. In the decades that followed the vineyard was consolidated from 42 to 71 hectares, and by the time of the great Bordeaux vintages late in the 20th century, Duhart-Milon had regained its rightful place as a great wine among Bordeaux and a model of the Pauillac style.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter, Jane Anson

"A wine that is often austere during En Primeur but is here showing its seductive side with a generous texture lending a wonderful richness through the palate giving it the feel of a 2009, although clearly loaded with tannins, but of a softer style than 2010 or 2016. It has a juiciness rippling with bramble fruit on the attack, then the herb, slate and liquorice root come in through the mid-palate adding complexity and gravitas. Harvest took place between 17 September and 4 October. 73IPT." Drink 2026 - 2040

94-96/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2018 Château Duhart-Milon checks in as a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot that hit 14% alcohol. Beautiful black currants, smoked earth, chocolate, and damp earth notes flow to a medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant Duhart-Milon that has ultra-fine tannins, a weightless texture, terrific balance, and a great finish. Seemingly all about finesse and elegance, it builds nicely on the palate and has a great finish. It should match or exceed the brilliant 2009."

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding

"Black core with barely a rim. So wonderfully scented, like the Clerc Milon. Blackcurrant tea, pure cassis, almost floral, but so pretty. Firm and dry but super-refined on the palate, dry tannic finesse. Finely balanced for the long term. Dark and savoury and full of such refined elegance and dark finesse. A beauty. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Barrel sample. (JH)." Drink 2028 - 2038
