Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
91-93/100 and Sweet Spot Outstanding, Burghound, Allen Meadows
"Very generous wood influence again stops just short of dominating the more floral-suffused aromas of spiced black cherry, exotic tea and a whiff of very ripe plum. The middle weight flavors possess a slightly finer texture that brims with evident minerality on the bright, youthfully austere and chiseled finish. This too is going to require extended patience." 91-93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley
"Bouchard's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with notions of spices and rose hips. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and youthfully introverted, with tangy acids and chalky tannins that I suspect will have further resolved by the time the wine is bottled in spring 2020. — Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage."
89-91/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
"The 2018 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru, from a parcel bought way back in 1775, was showing just a soupçon of sur-maturité on the nose; this seems to ebb away with time, though the bouquet remains extroverted and high-toned, featuring cassis and figgy notes. The palate is rounded on the entry with supple tannins, good structure and a fleshy, damson-tinged finish. I suspect this will be best enjoyed in its youth." Drink 2021 - 2030
