2018 Bouchard Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres

94 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous

A truly great Chardonnay from Meursault's lauded 'Genevrieres' vineyard. As Meursault has no Grand Crus, Premier Cru wines like this are the ultimate and definitive expression of the famous style. The soil here is lime and clayish gravel with some iron, allowing a beautiful balance of stony drainage and water holding for fruit lushness. While it is relatively warm and ripe, such austere soils produce high fruit quality with depth and mineral complexity. A rounded and complete expression of great Chardonnay terroir – and very good value for the price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

92-94/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2018 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru comes from 2.6 hectares of vine over two parcels. It has a vivacious lemon zest and orange blossom bouquet that shows a subtle influence from the lees. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Very light nuttiness and smokiness come through on the finish, which feels tense and quite persistent. Good potential." Drink 2022 - 2038

92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Hints of matchstick and exotic tea add breadth to the ripe, pure and pretty floral and poached pear-scented nose. The elegant middle weight flavors possess a lilting mouthfeel before concluding in a lightly stony, sleek, focused and persistent finish. This is particularly fine in the context of the vintage and it would be fair to describe this as classy." Drink 2026+

91-93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, orange oil and fresh pastry, the 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, with lively acids and a long, mineral finish. Bouchard is the second-largest landowner in this premier cru and produces a very consistent cuvée. — Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage"
