2018 Bouchard Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru Red Burgundy

92 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound

Superb value, this delicious Pinot Noir comes from Premier Cru-rated vineyards in Burgundy's famous Beaune. This locale's charming, nuanced fruit-ripeness and softness balances against the minerality from the marly limestone soils. Real concentration here allows a serious oak regime to round the Beaune du Chateau into a complex and compelling frame on this classic style. A powerful 1er Cru Burgundy for the same price as a standard Kiwi Pinot!

Its Origins

Today The Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house, Joseph Henriot, acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet while the wines are made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005, enabling them, to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

89-92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"There is plenty of menthol influence to the equally toasty aromas of red and dark currant where a hint of mocha is present. The exceptionally rich, round and delicious seductively textured medium-bodied flavors coat the palate on the sneaky long finish where the same bitter pit fruit character gradually emerges." 89-91/100 Parker's wine Advocate, William Kelley

"There are some 90,000 bottles of the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru du Château, a fine cuvée that readers may wish to think of as a rounder version of the 2005 vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, rich soil tones and a deft touch of toasty oak, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with rich structuring tannins and a flavorful finish. — Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage."

92/100 Decanter, Tim Atkin (2017 vintage)

"Part of the Bouchard range since 1907, this wine features 17 of the extensive lineup of Beaune premiers crus, grown on a mixture of soil types. Part of Frédéric Weber's skill lies in the blending of all these different cuvées to produce a wine that's textured, floral and sweet, with subtle reduction, some whole-bunch spice and a backdrop of 35% new wood."
