2018 Bouchard 1er Cru Savigny Les Lavieres
Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
91-93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley
"The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières derives from a 3.9-hectare parcel that Bouchard has owned for some time (I have magnums of the superb 1959 in my cellar). Wafting from the glass with a ripe bouquet of blackberries, cassis, burning embers, spices and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with lively acids, a generous core of fruit and fine, powdery tannins. — Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage."
90/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows
"Once again moderate wood and menthol influences can be found on the liqueur-like aromas of both red and dark raspberry that are trimmed in subtle earth and spice whiffs. There is very good verve to the well-delineated and lightly stony flavors that exhibit fine length on the firm and youthfully austere finale. This is substantially more structured and at least some patience will be required." Drink 2030+
88-90/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
"The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru comes from a 3.9-hectare south-facing vineyard on clay-rich soils over chalky rock. It has a clean, pure bouquet of perfumed black cherries, wild strawberry, blood orange and brown spice aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and gentle grip. The compact, rather sinewy finish needs time to mellow. Fine." 2023 - 2033
