This is a lovely clean and precise Chardonnay – un-oaked, but with a plump and rounded mouthfeel due to aging on yeast lees. Boneline are serious about the Burgundy characteristics of Waipara and this is their take on a Petit Chablis – complete with the limey mineral nuances (though no harsh acidity). Stylish and delicate, a perfect aperitif or fish/food wine from a new producer to watch.

Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A plush, rounded gently creamy texture to the bouquet. Aromas of ripe yellow stone-fruits, citrus , apple and then French oak. On the palate - young, fresh, fruity and engaging with a firm texture, medium+ acidity, orchard fruit and citrus flavours. One of the Waipara regional signatures of chalk and mineral is at the heart of this wine. Combined with the acid line and core of fruit - you’ll’ need to decant or give this wine some time in cellar. Not long though. Great finish and palate feel." Drink 2020 - 2024+

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The powerful, distinctive 2018 vintage (4.5*) was made with ‘minimal use of old oak barrels’. Bright, light lemon/green, it is a weighty wine, with concentrated, ripe, stonefruit flavours to the fore, considerable complexity, finely balanced acidity and a dry, lengthy finish. Still youthful, it should be at its best mid-2020+."
