Its Origins
Big Sky Wines is the Te Muna Road Martinborough wine venture of Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban who returned to New Zealand from France in 2005 to make world class, hand-crafted wines that express their origins. Katherine studied and worked in viticulture and winemaking in New Zealand and France, doing vintages in Bordeaux. Jeremy is a fourth generation winemaker, a scion of the famous Corban family. Katherine and Jeremy are part of the fabric of the Te Muna Road district, with well-known neighbours Craggy Range, The Escarpment Vineyard, Te Hera and Julicher Estate around them.
Katherine and Jeremy took over a site established by Ian Campbell, with 1.8 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and clone 10/5 Pinot Noir planted in 1989, and 4.2 ha of clone 115 Pinot Noir planted in 1999. They have revitalised the vineyard and personally tend the vineyard. The first crops were sold as contract fruit, but from 2013, their own label ‘Big Sky’ became the main focus, taking 80% of the yield, a reversal of the past.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Sweetly fruited and fabulously lifted, the bouquet shows dark cherry, plum, vanilla, game and mixed spice aromas, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate that is supple and fleshy. The wine offers terrific fruit purity together with delightful spicy complexity, finishing long and delicious." Drink 2019 - 2023
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"Offering very good value, the 2018 vintage (5) was estate-grown and matured in French oak casks (15 per cent new.) Full-coloured, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, with generous, ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, good tannin support, and a savoury, finely structured finish. A very ageworthy wine, it’s well worth cellaring to mid-2021+."
18.5/20 Joelle Thomson
"Jeremy Corban and Katherine Jacobs are Partners in life and winemaking, producing small quantities of this superlative wine from their Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough, where they opened their new-ish cellar door. This wine is dry, full bodied and concentrated with intense flavours of red cherries, earthy aromas and spice. It drinks well now and will definitely improves with time in the cellar for at least five years."
