Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Fermented by indigenous yeasts in oak puncheons. Dry, crisply refreshing chenin blanc with green apple, lime-citrus and saline oyster-shell flavours supported by attractive, lively acidity. Good now but should age well 10 JUL 2020." Drink 2020 - 2028
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The 2018 vintage was hand-harvested in the Southern Valleys and partly fermented with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak puncheons. A dry style, it is very ageworthy. Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, with strong, youthful, citrusy, slightly appley flavours, showing good intensity, and slightly biscuity notes adding complexity. Best drinking 2021+."
90/100 Cameron Douglas (2017 vintage)
Fruity and varietal expression of Chenin Blanc with aromas of fresh crunchy red apple, quince and citrus. a light sweet herb note and wet stone mineral suggestions. Dry, crisp and refreshing on the palate with salivating acidity and flavours that reflect the nose. Balanced lengthy finish, varietal and floral too with a touch of honey suckle. Drink now and through 2026.
