A great year for this perfectly balanced, crisp and mineral Sav. (95/100 Bob Campbell) . Double Gold Medal Winner at the San francisco Wine Show and a 95/100 from the judges. Wairau is not the only Valley represented here, so this beautiful bell curve of Marlborough flavours is nicely rounded but tends toward a cooler-feeling take on the region – taught flavours of gooseberry and green citrus appearing in harmony and focus. Delicious and classic from the safest hands in Marlborough Sav.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Bright, fresh and concentrated sauvignon blanc with punchy regional and varietal flavours including capsicum, nettle, gooseberry, melon and subtle passionfruit. A deliciously accessible wine that delivers everything I expect from Marlborough sauvignon... and more 5/11/2018" Drink 2018 - 2022

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)

"The 2017 vintage (4.5*) - the first not to be labelled 'Province Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - is a regional blend, grown in the Awatere Valley (51 per cent), Wairau Valley (30 per cent) and at Kekerengu (19 per cent). Made in a fully dry style (1.5 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is mouthfilling, finely balanced and clearly herbaceous, with strong, vibrant melon, green capsicum and lime flavours, a slightly salty streak, and a crisp, long finish."
