A great year for this perfectly balanced, crisp and mineral Sav. After a 95/100 from Bob Campbell, this got the same score in San Fransisco along with a Double Gold Medal. The vineyard sources go beyond the warm Wairau Valley, so the beautiful bell curve of Marlborough flavours are harmonised by cooler-climate flavours of gooseberry and green citrus. This delicious wine is a super-classic of the style, from the safest hands in Marlborough Sav.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Bright, fresh and concentrated sauvignon blanc with punchy regional and varietal flavours including capsicum, nettle, gooseberry, melon and subtle passionfruit. A deliciously accessible wine that delivers everything I expect from Marlborough sauvignon... and more 5/11/2018" Drink 2018 - 2022

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The skilfully crafted 2018 vintage (4.5*) is a regional blend, grown in the Awatere Valley (58 per cent), Southern Valleys (26 per cent), the Lower Wairau (5 per cent) and at Kekerengu (11 per cent). Full-bodied, with strong tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavours, it has lees-aging notes adding complexity and a dry (1.6 grams/litre of residual sugar), very harmonious finish."
